BACK COVER of BOOK (property of Adrianna, Adora, and Joyce Svitak)
Blackbeard the Pirate! Wild wolves! Doom's bloodhounds!
Who said poetry was for the meek and mild? Blithering nonsense! Adora and Adrianna Svitak are here to prove that poetry is not the sole domain of geezers or dignified intellectual types—in fact, they believe that kids can write poetry too. In case you're skeptical, they'd like to offer these poems, which they wrote when they were between the ages of seven and eleven, for your inspection. Their topics range from the contemplative (friendship, loneliness, and starry skies) to the rowdy (piracy, explosive sneezes, and fireworks).
By now you may be saying, well that's all very fine for these uppity girls, but what about me? If you're a kid with a taste for adventure, this is the book for you. You can jump into the action by reading Adora’s practical tips for the up-and-coming underage poet; each selection of poems features the ten-year-old author’s tips on finding inspiration in the strangest of places.

EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL (the article below is property of Optimal Path)
Exploring the Blogosphere
Blogs have the potential to be more than just online journals—they can be communities and forums of information. To help students realize this potential, allow them to get a feel for what's out there. Create a lesson that serves as a sort of 'get acquainted' with the blogosphere. Exploring and evaluating topic-based blogs allows students to familiarize themselves with the topic-based format while simultaneously honing their critical thinking skills. Students who explore topic-based blogs will also get a feeling for the way that a chosen topic can provide inspiration, feedback, and a built-in audience.
There are various tactics you can employ to initiate exploration. You can allow students to choose a topic of interest and use a search engine or a site like bloglines.com to search for blogs on their topic, or you can create a 'safe exploration zone' by providing students with a list of pre-approved topic-based blogs to visit. Both options have their advantages.
Allowing students free reign to explore builds essential Internet skills, and helps develop a sense of the connectivity of information. If you simply tell students to type their subject of interest + the word blog into a search engine, you will be well on your way to encouraging each student to develop a sense of ownership over your blogging curriculum. You are immediately associating blogging with a topic that interests them, and with a feeling of freedom and a sense of personal choice. The feeling that they are being trusted enough to explore on their own will be enough to keep most students on task, although some amount of patrolling may be necessary.
Once students have spent some time exploring the blog world, you can guide them towards the next natural step: communicating the knowledge they have developed, and expressing their opinions to an audience of peers.

TRAVEL WRITING (the following excerpt is from an article written by Felisa Rogers)
Our van was perched on a grassy bluff overlooking the river. Grass grew thick and tall like corn or sugarcane. The road was a red dirt smear in the rain, and all around us the jungle steamed and dripped. Snared clouds stewed slowly in the valley below; the dripping noises were louder than the bird calls. We were somewhere in Guatemala, far enough out into the country that we hadn’t heard any news from the rest of the world in days.
